...so I may as well get off my butt and create another journal; I have been stockpiling a bunch of images to feature after all.  So without further ado (and because I don't really have anything to say, or rather the energy to be particularly creative with my words):

For those of you not in Sydney, you should take a look at look at the local Sydney news, for example the Sydney Morning Herald.  There is no white balance problem with those photos.  They are not photoshopped.  Believe me, I commuted through it this morning and am still looking at it out the window of my office building in the CBD.

There was a significant cold front that passed through from the west last night (coming from where all the good Aussie "red earth" is).  It unleashed very heavy rain & wind last night, and then this morning...  The whole of Sydney is blanketed in thick, orange dust!

I walked out the front door this morning at 5:30am and for a second wondered if I really was awake or if I was still in bed dreaming - it was (and still is) a very surreal experience.  I'm partly kicking myself that I didn't bring my DSLR with me to work today, but partly glad too because cleaning out all that camera-destroying dust would be near impossible I think.  But then again how often do you experience a morning where you can't see any blue anywhere...at all!?!?

While you're reading, check these features out...

I don't really have anything to say except that I've been collecting a bunch of other people's shots with the intention of doing some feature journals.  Only problem is I'm generally too lazy busy to actually create the journal entries.  Now I know that most of them have had plenty of exposure already (no pun intended) but I don't care - I still plan to beautify my little corner of the web with their awesome images anyway.

So, no more sitting on my butt.  Here are some shots that made me go WOW!! (in most cases, quite literally)...

What is it about water that draws me in?  The light, reflections and clarity in these shots is fantastic.

Check out the mantis large - awesome detail & wonderful character.  That lightning strike is brilliantly composed, especially given how brief a strike lasts for - Vincent is some kind of magician!  And that icy leaf makes me reminisce about spring breaking through the frosty chains of winter - a cosy fireplace, a cup of hot chocolate, the wonderful strains of early Miles Davis playing in the background...

These are wonderfully emotive portraits IMHO - makes me want to stare for hours trying to figure out how the subject is feeling.

I thought I'd see what cool stuff I could do with a premium membership today, so I bit the bullet and forked out some pocket change for a few months.  I think it'd probably take me a few months just to customise stuff the way I'd like it to be.

(I wonder if I can start every sentence in this journal with 'I'...hmmm...)

I had last week off work so I took the very limited opportunity to go scout out a couple new locations (well, new for me).  I walked in to Brent's "Canyon X" from the Turimetta end (south) and, since I was short on time, left via Brent's route up the north cliff (against my better judgment) - Brent is insane!  I took my son up to Solider's Point to see what it looked like at sunset and to have a little one-on-one time with him (glad I did - he enjoyed it).  I also drove up to Avoca with the intention of scouting out a number of spots on the coast line between Terrigal & Bouddi, but unfortunately time magically disappeared (as it always does when I have a camera in my hands) and I only managed to scout the headlands at the north and south ends of Avoca.  I really wanted to get to the south side of a beautiful 'V' rock formation that points out to the ocean but when I asked a few locals how the fishermen got there they told me I'd have to skirt the great gap in the rocks (risking life & limb with the incoming waves pounding in there) and time the waves & tides right, and I'd be stuck there until the next low tide.  I didn't really feel like dieing that day so I gave it a miss.

I think that'll do for now (once again I'm time poor - might revise later), so I might just feature a few thumbs (because I can now).
Enjoy.  (D'oh!  I mean "I hope you enjoy them".)

For someone who's not a photographer, I've received a couple nice dA surprises (for my very casual hobby) in the last few weeks.

I got my first DD a few weeks ago, which caught me completely off guard.  I logged on to dA one morning and was expecting the usual 5 or so activities, perhaps a comment or reply and a couple new deviations & journals to read through.  What I saw was 5000+ page views, 1000 activities and about 200 comments.  I thought dA was busted!  It took me a minute or two to realise what was going on.  It's amazing the increase in exposure (no pun intended) you get from a single DD.  The irony of it is the photo's not even one of my best ones (IMHO).  But, anyway, I'm not complaining (thanks to @DreamingMyth for the suggestion and @leaf-lover for the DD).

Then today I got a note from *TheDeviantAwards, which said I'd been nominated for Best Landscape Photographer.  Say what?!?!  To even be mentioned in the same journal entry as Guy Tal, Marc Adamus & Hougaard Malan is, for me, awesome.  Now, I confess, being fairly new to dA, I don't know how legit this is or if it's a big deal or not.  But, for me, a nomination like this is a bit of a thrill because some of the others who have been nominated are some of my favourite landscapers on dA.  (And there are a good number of others that I follow, who I don't see on the nomination list, that are far more worthy than me.)

Anyway, a couple nice surprises, and it's always nice when you get encouragement and/or feedback, even negative criticism (although it's better when it's constructive), so thanks to all who took the time to check out my shots.  I wish I had more time to peruse the multitude of amazing shots on dA (not to mention non-landscape categories & even non-photographic art).  There are certainly some very talented people here, and I thank them for the welcomed distractions from the drudgery of work.  Speaking of which, I think my nose needs another dose of grindstone...
